Managing emotions in school

Today we are going to learn more about the importance of teaching children how to manage their emotions. We have conducted an investigation by reading an evidence-based text, and we discovered several interesting ideas that we would like to share with you in this post.

Emotional management is an essential component of the educational process and cannot be separated from the activities carried out in the classroom. For teachers, it is crucial to support children in how they identify, express, and regulate their emotions, since developing these abilities from an early age strengthens self-regulation processes that will be useful in situations requiring greater emotional control.

In educational settings involving children, emotional management significantly contributes to their social and emotional development. Although emotions are part of human nature, they need to be reinforced through guided experiences and moments of reflection that help children understand and handle them appropriately.

Managing emotions involves learning to recognize what one feels, express those feelings appropriately, and adjust reactions according to the situation. These skills directly influence children’s ability to build relationships, resolve conflicts, and learn, as emotions affect processes such as attention, memory, and thinking.

Teachers play a key role in helping children name what they feel, communicate it respectfully, and apply self-regulation strategies. When these abilities are consistently reinforced, improvements often appear in emotional well-being, social interaction, and academic performance.

Furthermore, promoting emotional management benefits the entire school environment. Educators who develop these skills themselves contribute to creating more harmonious, receptive, and collaborative spaces, which support learning.

On the other hand, a lack of emotional skills can lead to difficulties. The American Psychological Association warns that poor emotional regulation is associated with issues such as anxiety, depression, and attention-related disorders in childhood.

In summary, fostering emotional management in children is essential for their overall development. Strengthening these skills helps them build healthier relationships, face challenges, solve conflicts, and learn more effectively, while also improving the overall classroom climate.
